  9.     The artist (1887-1986) studied at Chicago's Art Institute
  10. and bequeathed 20 of her paintings to its permanent collection.
  11. Last week the institute admitted that one of them -- East River
  12. from the Shelton -- painted in 1926 and worth as much as
  13. $500,000, is missing and presumed lost.
